October, the month of Black History is here once again. For People who have never heard of Black History Month or doesn't know much about it, I will share my little understanding with you as I once did an essay on the topic:

Black History Month celebrates achivements and awareness by African Americans and people of African backgrounds around the world. It was started by an African American man in the 1920's.  It is celebrated for the whole month of February in the United States and Canada, and the month of October in the United Kingdom.

How do people feel about Black History Month?
Some people feel it's unfair to set aside a month celebrating the history of one race. But people who think black history is important say that as long as there is racism, unfairness, and a lack of understanding of black culture, there is a place for Black History Month. No matter what your background, everyone can celebrate the importance of Black History by being kind, respecting each other's color and race and honour the great and brave people who lost their lives fighting for this cause, such as:

Martin Luther King
He was an African Amerian who was very famous, brave and courageous in his days. He fought endlessly to destroy racism and was assassinated in 1968. Martin Luther King left us with some influencial quotes. Some of my faves:

"The time is always right to do the right thing",

"Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear".

Malcolm X
Malcolm became a leader of a Black Muslim group called Nation of Islam. He was very outspoken and supported black and equal rights which sometimes involves violence.  Many people didn't like his message, but many others came out to support him. He was killed by a group of black gunmen who felt he had taken his message too far.

Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was the first black President of South Africa. He spent 27 years in prison for his beliefs. He became famous for his long fight against bad government and racism. He became a hero to people all over the world. As S.A's President, he was respected for his courage and wisdom in bringing people together to live in peace.

There are many more brave people such as the above and BHM, you can find out more on google if interested.

  9. Well done to bringing awareness Zee. My favourite Dr. Martin Luther King quotes are :

•We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.

•I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. ;)

    1. Wasn't Rosa Parks great? For those who have never heard of her....Rosa was a black woman who was famous for refusing to give up her seat on a bus for a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. She was arrested. This started a very important movement in the fight for equal rights on buses.

  27. Great info Polo! I've learned about this last year. I think it's horrible how some people show hatred towards black people. I think there's this racism group called the Ku Klux Klan where people protested against the black people's rights. Remember, no matter what skin colour you have, you are beautiful and unique. Don't let anyone bring you down.
